Green Your School Challenge
The Green Your School Challenge is a great opportunity for you to both help the environment and get some extra money for college! The Challenge was created by DoSomething.org not only to increase environmental awareness among students, but because they believe young people can make a big difference in society.
Why is the Challenge a great scholarship for high school seniors? It helps students take their ideas and make positive changes in their schools. If this program sounds interesting to you, act fast because the Green Your School Challenge ends on April 22nd.
To get involved, first, you should register your school online with the Green Your School Challenge and get at least 10 other students in your school to sign-up as well. Then, start brainstorming and planning: How can you help your school become more green? Think of the many ways in which you and your school could reduce your impact on the environment.
Possible ideas include:
- Develop recycling plans.
- Decrease energy usage in your classroom.
- Start a public information campaign to increase awareness on environmental issues.
- Start an agricultural program at your school complete with composting and organic gardening.
Want more ideas?
There are many suggestions available on the Green Your School Challenge website. Once you have developed your plan, start putting it into action. Want to see how your plan and your school stack up to the competition? Go to the Green Your School Challenge website and you can look up other participating schools. You will need to send progress reports to the Challenge showing effective your plans are and what changes have been made as a result of your plans.
Your plan and progress reports are reviewed by the panel of judges, which includes experts and celebrities, and compared to what others are doing at their schools. For your hard work, there are seven different prizes available, including: two Grand Prize winners who receive $5,000 each to help further their programs and a school banner to show off your success, five $1,000 awards for the schools with the most participants signed up, and four $500 scholarships awarded individuals chosen from the pool of those that signed-up and referred five friends.
If you want the chance to take your ideas and turn them into positive changes, as well as get the chance to get scholarship money for school, check out the Green Your School Challenge!
