In early 1919 Frederick and Mary were both young students at Juanita College partaking in tennis lessons. Both being left handed, the tennis instructor chose to pair the team up during practice. While coaching tennis, he noticed and had a belief that many of his left handed players truly excelled in the sport. The Juanita tennis coach thought that paired with each other, Mary and Fredrick could make an unstoppable athletic team and placed the two together on the court. With an incredible twist of fate, it was love at first sight (or perhaps, at left hand!). The couple began dating and was eventually married. They had such a wonderful life together and were so thankful for their chance meeting they left a large sum of money to Juanita College. Their only request? Use the money towards a yearly scholarship for a lucky lefty attending the school. Since the scholarship began in 1979, over forty Juanita College have been able to take advantage of the special left handed scholarships.
